Understanding Pop Rivet Sizes

Open end blind rivets are the most common type sold across hardware stores and online. Available in 3 common head types – truss, countersunk and large flange.

A larger flange rivet is used when a wider surface head type is required usually with soft or brittle top sheets.

Other types of blind rivets include a sealed rivet that features a totally enclosed rivet end, the mandrel is sealed inside. Multigrip rivets offer an extended grip range with a standard rivet body diameter.

How to read blind rivets codes?

Example: 1080.4100000

"1080" – Allfasteners Group Code for A-S Dome Head Rivet

"4" – Rivet Diameter Code (see table below)

"10" – Grip Range Code (see table below)

"A" – Rivet Material Code

"S" – Mandrel Material (stem) Code

A-S 4-10 is an aluminium rivet with a steel mandrel, and a 3.2mm (1/8") body diameter with a grip range of 12.7 – 15.9mm

Common Rivet Diameter Table:

The rivet body diameter is the most important measure when selecting the rivet as it directly relates to the mandrel strength and the drilled hole size. If a hole is oversized your rivet might pull completely through damaging your material.

Rivet Body Diameter, d ø
Code Diameter Rec. Drill Dia
  Imperial Metric
3 3/32" 2.4mm 2.5mm
4 1/8" 3.2mm 3.3mm (#30)
5 5/32" 4.0mm 4.1mm (#20)
6 3/16" 4.8mm 4.9mm (#11)
8 1/4" 6.4mm 6.5mm

How to Choose the Correct Rivet Grip Range

What is grip range? Blind fasteners such as rivets must protrude through the other side of 2 mating materials. This is crucial to the success of the installation, therefor a grip range is more important then the length of the rivet. Don't be confused by the quoted length of a rivet with it's maximum grip thickness. The rivets body length will always be slightly longer than the maximum grip value given. Refer to the table below.

Rivet Grip Range Table:

Grip Range
Code Imperial min - max Metric min - max Mutigrip Rivet min - max
1 up-to 1/6" 0.5 – 1.6mm -
2 1/6" to 1/8" 1.6 – 3.2mm -
3 1/8" to 3/16" 3.2 – 4.8mm 0.8 – 4.8mm
4 3/16" to 1/4" 4.8 – 6.4mm 1.2 – 6.4mm
5 1/4" to 5/16" 6.4 – 7.9mm -
6 5/16" to 3/8" 7.9 – 9.5mm -
8 3/8" to 1/2" 9.5 – 12.7mm -
10 1/2" to 5/8" 12.7 – 15.9mm -
12 5/8" to 3/4" 15.9 – 19.1mm -
14 3/4" to 7/8" 19.1 – 22.2mm -
16 7/8 to 1" 22.2 – 25.4mm -
20 1 to 1-1/4" 25.4 – 31.8mm -
