100-year Design Life of Concrete Anchors
Civil infrastructure projects are often designed for a 100-year working life. Bridges, tunnels, buildings such as train stations, rail infrastructure and earth supporting structures are just some examples. These are required to last for as long as possible because the cost of replacement or maintenance far outweighs any initial cost savings that could be achieved from less durable cheaper infrastructure. This means that any structure or element that is intended to last 100 years must use concrete anchors for support that have a design life of 100 years also.
However, ETA certification has been available for a design life of 50 years. This has been of a particular concern for chemical anchors (bonded anchors) because of questions around durability and creep due to sustained loading.
The good news is that 100-year design life ETA certification is now available for bonded anchors. This process follows the requirements of EAD 330499-01-0601. This is the same testing as for 50-year certification; however the sustained load test times and other requirements are doubled. If there is any reduction in performance, these reduced capacities are published for 100 years.
